Supervisor Goodwin Condemns Rising Violence in Milwaukee County
MILWAUKEE – Last night, one person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting outside of a bar in downtown Milwaukee. The county is experiencing a troubling rise in violence, with 25 homicides recorded in the first month of the year.
County Supervisor Russell Antonio Goodwin, Sr. released the following statement calling for an end to the violence:
“The violence happening in Milwaukee County must stop immediately.
“We know that arguments and fights are the driving factor behind so many of these senseless shootings. We must learn to resolve our conflicts without resorting to violence, as these shootings are destroying our community.
“I am pleading with everyone to please take advantage of the many resources available that can help before a situation turns violent. These include the 414Life outreach and conflict mediation support (414-439-5398), Sojourner Family Peace Center‘s domestic violence shelter (414-933-2722), Milwaukee County’s 24-Hour Mental Health Crisis Line (414-257-7222), and the National Suicide Prevention Hotline (800-273-8255).
“We also know that the number of guns on our streets is completely unacceptable. We need changes to state and federal law that will help get illegal guns off the streets and ensure that violent criminals cannot get their hands on the weapons that are tearing families apart.
“As the City of Milwaukee transitions to new leadership, the next Mayor of Milwaukee needs to make addressing violence in our city their top priority.”
Supervisor Goodwin was elected to the County Board in 2020 and is currently serving his first term as the Supervisor for the 18th District.
