Senator Agard Introduces Legislation to Close Gun Loophole in Wisconsin

MADISON – Today, Senator Melissa Agard (D-Madison), joined Senator Bob Wirch (D-Somers) and Representatives Tod Ohnstad (D-Kenosha), Tip McGuire (D-Kenosha), and Deb Andraca (D-Whitefish Bay) to introduce legislation to clarify a state statute regarding the possession of a dangerous weapon by a person who is under 18 years old.

While Wisconsin law generally prohibits a minor from possessing a dangerous weapon, there is an exception which allows a minor to possess a long gun or rifle if the barrel is longer than 16 inches. This bill simply clarifies that a minor may only possess a long gun or rifle if they are legally hunting and in compliance with Wisconsin’s hunting laws.

Senator Agard released the following statement:

“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their communities. The bill we are introducing today closes a loophole that currently allows a minor of any age to possess a long barreled gun outside the context of hunting. This legislation respects Wisconsin’s sporting heritage while protecting public safety. The gaps in our state’s gun laws have continually put ordinary Wisconsinites at risk.”
