Record High Seven-Day COVID-19 Case Total

38,547 new cases in past week.

Wisconsin’s total of new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours dropped by approximately 2,800 compared to the prior day, but the seven-day case total still moved upward to a record high of 38,547.

The seven-day total eclipses the total number of cases in March, April, May, June, July and August. September, when Wisconsin’s caseload began setting new high after new high, accounted for 46,671 cases in its entirety (October? 103,096).

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 4,280 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday afternoon from 12,761 tests. It is the lowest case total reported in five days.

The seven-day positive case rate, the percentage of tests that confirm a new case of the disease and proxy for if the disease’s spread is growing or slowing, stands at a record 33.77%. The 14-day average at 31.76%. The 14-day average set a low of 2.69% on June 19th.

Officials have looked for the positive case rate to trend downward to indicate a slowing spread of disease and sufficient testing. Multiple public health benchmarks call for the positive case rate figure to be sustained under five percent.

The case surge is overwhelming health department contact tracing efforts and leading to record hospitalization levels and daily death totals.

On Saturday the Wisconsin Hospital Association reported that a record 1,806 people were actively hospitalized with a confirmed case of the disease, an increase of 19 over Friday and 296 over a week ago. The WHA dashboard was not updated by the time this article was filed Sunday.

DHS reported 112 people were newly hospitalized in the past 24 hours in its daily data release. A total of 12,839 people have required hospitalization since the outbreak began, 1,342 in the past week.

DHS reported 11 deaths Sunday. A total of 2,312 Wisconsin residents have died as a result of the virus, including 622 in Milwaukee County. Officials confirmed last week that the total includes only people where a medical examiner determined the disease was a contributing factor in the death.

An average of 29.07 deaths per day have been reported over the past 30 days. Thirty days ago the rolling average was 8.83

Since September, Milwaukee County has gone from having the worst per-capita outbreak to the 19th worst in the state, even as its case and hospitalization load has surged to record levels.

Menominee County has recorded 9,265.2 cases per 100,000 residents (up from 9,173.9). Shawano County has recorded 7,200.7 cases per 100,000 residents (up from 7,140.1). Brown, Oconto, Dodge, Forest, Kewaunee, Winnebago, Calumet, Langlade, Waushara, Outagamie, Fond du Lac, Waupaca, Florence, Marinette, Marquette and Sheboygan counties are the remaining counties leading Milwaukee.

According to DHS data, 5,219.3 out of every 100,000 Milwaukee County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak began (up from 5,144.6).

The statewide average of cases per 100,000 residents rose to 4,625.6 (up from 4,551.6). Wisconsin has recorded a per-capita rate of 1,060.6 cases per 100,000 residents in the past two weeks according to the DHS activity level report released Wednesday.
