Friday Wisconsin eclipsed 6,000 COVID-19 cases in a single day for the first time. Saturday the state passed the 7,000 case threshold for the first time.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 7,065 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday afternoon from 18,928 tests. It comes as the state has recorded over 5,700 cases in each of the past four days.

A record 37,760 cases have been reported in the past seven days, a total that is up over 500% in two months and eclipses the number of cases reported in March, April, May and June combined.

The seven-day positive case rate, the percentage of tests that confirm a new case of the disease, stands at a record 31.61%. The 14-day average at 31.28%. The 14-day average set a low of 2.69% on June 19th.

Officials have looked for the positive case rate to trend downward to indicate a slowing spread of disease and sufficient testing. Multiple public health benchmarks call for the positive case rate figure to be sustained under five percent.

The case surge is overwhelming health department contact tracing efforts and leading to record hospitalization levels and daily death totals.

The Wisconsin Hospital Association reported that a record 1,806 people were actively hospitalized with a confirmed case of the disease, an increase of 19 over Friday and 296 over a week ago.

DHS reported 173 people were newly hospitalized in the past 24 hours in its daily data release. A total of 12,727 people have required hospitalization since the outbreak began, 1,353 in the past week.

DHS reported 45 deaths Saturday. A total of 2,301 Wisconsin residents have died as a result of the virus, including 616 in Milwaukee County. Officials confirmed last week that the total includes only people where a medical examiner determined the disease was a contributing factor in the death.

A record average of 29.23 deaths per day have been reported over the past 30 days.

Since September, Milwaukee County has gone from having the worst per-capita outbreak to the 19th worst in the state, even as its case and hospitalization load has surged to record levels.

Menominee County has recorded 9,173.9 cases per 100,000 residents (up from 8,831.6). Shawano County has recorded 7,140.1 cases per 100,000 residents (up from 7,006.8). Brown, Oconto, Kewaunee, Dodge, Forest, Calumet, Winnebago, Waushara, Langlade, Outagamie, Fond du Lac, Waupaca, Florence, Marinette, Sheboygan and Marquette counties are the remaining counties leading Milwaukee.

According to DHS data, 5,144.6 out of every 100,000 Milwaukee County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak began (up from 5,044.1).

The statewide average of cases per 100,000 residents rose to 4,551.6 (up from 4,429.4). Wisconsin has recorded a per-capita rate of 1,060.6 cases per 100,000 residents in the past two weeks according to the DHS activity level report released Wednesday.
