The file, which will be heard at the next meeting of the Common Council’s Steering and Rules Committee on Monday, October 19th, aims to hear directly from organizations about what change they would like to see. Co-sponsors of the file include Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd, Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, Alderman José G. Pérez, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderman Cavalier Johnson, Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa and Alderman Nik Kovac.
“Our city, state and the country have seen wide-scale activism in recent months following the murder of George Floyd and countless other people of color. The level of activism has been inspiring and the City needs to remain an active participant in these calls for systemic change,” said Alderwoman Coggs. “The intent of this communication file is to provide a platform to engage the groups who have been working to bring awareness to social justice issues and find solutions together. The best legislation is born out of collaboration, and we look forward to working with the community to create the best, most effective legislative change possible.”
