Wisconsin communities continue to enact conversion therapy bans
Statement of Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa September 2, 2020
I was delighted to see the news that West Allis passed a conversion therapy ban on minors at yesterday’s Common Council meeting. As the first openly LGBTQ+ Alderperson in the City of Milwaukee, seeing our local communities ban this dangerous practice warms my heart.
I want to thank the West Allis Common Council for passing this ban, and in particular Alderman Angelito Tenorio who introduced the legislation. I also want to extend a thank you to Common Council President Cavalier Johnson, and all the members, who led the way in 2018 when Milwaukee became the first city in Wisconsin to pass such a ban.
West Allis joins a growing list of communities to ban conversion therapy, and I encourage local governments to continue acting on this issue to let it be known that the state legislature should follow suit with a statewide ban. A bipartisan bill was introduced last session but was subsequently stalled. It is time the state act in the interest of ALL Wisconsin residents.
