MADISON Ranell Washington, partnership development adviser for American Family Insurance, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) Board of Directors.

Washington’s experience includes some 15 years as a credit analyst and business banker, most recently serving as vice president of business banking and community development group team leader with Town Bank in Milwaukee. He has been honored for his philanthropic involvement with United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha; he also currently serves as a member of Milwaukee’s City Plan Commission.

“Ranell’s extensive experience in commercial lending and his ability to build critical business relationships will bring added depth and strength to WHEDA’s Board of Directors,” said WHEDA CEO Joaquín Altoro. “As we work to expand affordable housing and economic opportunity for the people of Wisconsin, we’re grateful for leaders like Ranell who are willing to dedicate their time and talent to our mission.”

Washington, who graduated from UW-Milwaukee with a bachelor’s degree and finance and marketing as well as a certificate in real estate, started his career as a commercial real estate loan representative for BMO Harris Bank in Milwaukee. In his current role as partnership development adviser with American Family Insurance in Milwaukee, he develops external relationships with a focus on communicating needs, solving issues and creating synergies.

“Part of my work involves championing new diversity and inclusion opportunities with existing partners and building shared understanding of how these dynamics can drive success,” Washington said. “I see WHEDA’s focus on affordable housing and economic opportunity as essential to community sustainability. Access to safe, affordable shelter and family-supporting jobs are fundamental to creating more equitable communities where all can thrive.”

WHEDA board members include the Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Administration (or designee), the CEO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, and six public members nominated by the governor and appointed by the state senate. In addition, two state senators, one from each party and selected by senate leadership, and two state representatives, one from each party and selected by assembly leadership, also serve on the WHEDA Board. Members serve staggered four-year terms.
