Property tax resolution to be discussed at special Common Council meeting
News Release from Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs
The Common Council will hold a special meeting on Monday, June 1st at 12 p.m. to consider a resolution relating to property tax payments. Common Council file #200028, sponsored by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, directs the City Treasurer to waive interest and penalty charges on an outstanding property tax balance owed by a taxpayer on the property tax installment payment program between April 1 and September 30, 2020. The resolution is co-sponsored by Alderwoman Chantia Lewis.
“As residents continue to face financial difficulties due to the impact of COVID-19, we wanted to make sure that we are doing everything in our power to provide what relief we can,” said Alderwoman Coggs. “The waiving of penalties and interest on late property tax payments is one way in which we can ease the financial burden for homeowners across the city, and I look forward to supporting this resolution at the special Council meeting next week.”
To be eligible, a taxpayer’s property tax installment payments must be current and not delinquent on April 1, 2020, and the taxpayer must be found to be experiencing economic hardship. The resolution further states that every Milwaukee taxpayer has, and is, experiencing economic hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and is therefore eligible for a waiver.
The special Common Council meeting will take place at 12 p.m. on Monday, June 1st. The meeting will be televised live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
