Supervisor Taylor Reaffirms his Strong Opposition to the Living Wage Increase Proposal

Milwaukee, WI – Supervisor Steve Taylor reiterated his strong opposition to the minimum wage increase proposal, to be considered today by the Milwaukee County Finance, Personnel and Audit Committee.
“Once again some of my colleagues are playing with fire by putting the economic well-being of Milwaukee County in jeopardy with this proposal,” said Supervisor Taylor. “It’s simply unrealistic and has potential to drive away businesses from operating in Milwaukee County.”
The proposal aims to increase the minimum wage to 110 percent of the Federal Poverty Line – currently at $12.45. This is well above the levels of some major metropolitan cities with much higher costs of living, such as San Francisco ($10.00) and New York ($10.00) and Los Angeles, ($10.30). Supervisor David Bowen and few other County Supervisors who are in support of this measure plan to announce its consideration before the committee at a press conference today.
“As I’ve said in the past, this is the time when the County Board ought to be working on initiatives that attract rather than deter companies from doing business with Milwaukee County. This ordinance change is a questionable at best and at worst very destructive for our county’s economy. I hereby reiterate my commitment to work with my like-minded colleagues on the Board to stop this proposal,” Supervisor Taylor said.
