MCSO Arrests Driver In I-894 Crash

Milwaukee, WI (August 24, 2019) On Friday, August 23, 2019, at approximately 4:00 p.m., MCSO was dispatched to a personal injury crash, which occurred on southbound I-894 at the start of the North to West ramp in the Hale Interchange.
MCSO arrived on scene and found that a full size semi truck had rear ended two cars, which had been slowing down due to traffic congestion.
The occupants of the first vehicle were a twelve year old child, who suffered injuries, and the child’s mother, who suffered minor injuries; both were transported to a local hospital.
The occupant of the second vehicle also suffered minor injuries and refused additional medical attention at the scene.
The operator of a 2004 Freightliner, who has been identified as Jamie J. Mantel, was operating under the authority of QSP Utility, LLC out of Waterford, WI. Mr. Mantel was operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle without a CDL (“A” endorsement). At the time of the crash, he had been taken out of service that day at 11:58 a.m. during an inspection by a Wisconsin State Patrol Inspector.
Mr. Mantel voluntarily submitted to a draw but later revoked his consent at the hospital. Based upon Mr. Mantel’s SFST’s, no impairment was detected. He was arrested for Operating Without a CDL, and Operating While Under an Out of Service Order.
