"I proudly wear orange today for those who were tragically taken too soon in the epidemic of gun violence."

MILWAUKEE – State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement on National Gun Violence Awareness Day, part of Wear Orange Weekend. The event commemorates the lives of gun violence victims and advocates for gun violence prevention:

“I proudly wear orange today for those who were tragically taken too soon in the epidemic of gun violence. I stand with activists who fight every day to protect us all from the threat of violence made worse by legislative inaction.

“Gun violence has simply become a part of life for many young people today. This is heartbreaking, but not inevitable. I call on all my fellow elected officials to the right thing and the brave thing—listen to these activists. Listen to the families torn apart by murder and suicide by guns, those whose friends were killed, and the community members who have seen their neighborhoods forever changed.

“There are approximately 250 people that are shot every day in America that survive. There is a gun suicide every 25 minutes. There are 100 people shot and killed, on average, every day in our country. There are real commonsense solutions we should be able to make a reality. We need to honor victims by doing our jobs.”
