Black Leaders Organizing for Communities (BLOC) calls for accountability for officers involved in the Sterling Brown video
The actions of these offices are horrible and they must be held accountable.
This latest video showing police abuse towards a Black community member is yet another example of police using excessive force with Black people in situations that do not call for it. We have been through this so many times that we have become numb to it. It shows that Black people, no matter how rich and famous, continue to not be safe under the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD), nor any police department’s watch.
Once again we ask MPD: “Where is the accountability?” For MPD to send a Black officer to a Black church to ask for them to support the police, when the officers responsible won’t be punished, is unacceptable. The actions of these offices are horrible and they must be held accountable. If these actions are within the Milwaukee Police Department’s acceptable procedures, then those procedures need to be changed, immediately.
Black Leaders Organizing for Communities (BLOC) has committed to listening to the wants and needs of residents and we know that safety is amongst the greatest concerns. However, MPD has shown that it is incapable of bringing safety without continuously violating the human rights of Black people. Why should Black people continue to support funding with their tax dollars an organization that is under-performing and beyond accountability? We need a change in how we reimagine how we keep our communities safe. Perhaps it is time we begin to fund alternative, more effective safety resources such as trauma counseling, community groups and youth activities.
BLOC is demanding that Chief Morales immediately discipline the officers involved in this situation and commit to reforming the police department to meet the needs of ALL residents.
BLOC works to ensure a high quality of life and access to opportunities for members of the Black community in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin.
