MILWAUKEE — The following is the fall/winter 2017 calendar of events at the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum.
Exhibits
The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD, a National Exhibit Tour sponsored by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation
Extended through January 2, 2018
Join everyone’s favorite, silly character with changeable parts in The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD, a special interactive exhibit created by the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum in collaboration with PLAYSKOOL®. MR. POTATO HEAD will lead the way on a jungle safari, in outer space, and on an archaeological dig with amazingly fun ways to help children build fundamental skills, welcome new experiences with confidence, curiosity and humor, and to think about all they can be and do.
Outdoor fun in Bugs on the Balcony
Open through October 29
There is still time to explore the Bugs on the Balcony exhibit, now through October 29. Be sure to stop by the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum’s south balcony to build a giant insect using big bug parts or everyday objects, guide a bug through kid-sized maze tables or climb a 6-foot beehive while learning about anatomy, habitats and the value of insects.
The Pizza Factory and Café
Open September 1
The Pizza Factory and Café is now open. Kids can role-play as the factory supervisor, a pizza maker in the mini manufacturing line or a worker in the packaging department in this pretend business sponsored by Palermo’s.
Be A Maker Open Making
Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-noon & 2-4 p.m., and Saturday 2-4 p.m.
The Museum’s Be A Maker (BAM) space has all kinds of tools, equipment and materials that make it fun to tinker and create. Each month, the BAM space changes their STEAM-related focus and provides family-friendly projects and activities to promote early learning and self-guided exploration.
Special Events
Neighborhood Night
October 19, November 16 and December 21, 5-8 p.m.
Enjoy FREE admission from 5-8 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month. Neighborhood Night is presented by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, with additional support provided by the Schoenleber Foundation, US Bank and the Zilber Family Foundation, and media sponsor FOX6. The Museum will celebrate the Muskego Way, Amani and Metcalfe Park neighborhoods in October, November and December with special entertainment and resource booths hosted by community agencies and organizations. Every Neighborhood Night: Be A Maker!
The Museum’s Be A Maker (BAM) space has all kinds of tools, equipment and materials that make it fun to tinker and create. BAM programs during Neighborhood Night are presented in part by PPG.
Gala
October 7, 6:30 p.m.-12 a.m.
The Betty Brinn Children’s Museum will host its largest annual fundraiser on Saturday, October 7, with proceeds supporting outreach initiatives that provide free parent engagement, school readiness, admission and transportation assistance programs, and family events that benefit 80,000 children and adults each year. Enjoy a special evening in the Museum’s exhibits with an elegant dinner by Shully’s Cuisine & Events, a silent auction and live music by the Michael Walters Orchestra. Not-So-Scary Halloween
October 27 & 28, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Celebrate the fall season with plenty of Halloween fun created especially for young children at the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum’s popular Not-So Scary Halloween presented by Sendik’s Food Markets. Receive goodies at Treat Stops (with or without a costume.), and enjoy spooktacular activities and fun throughout the Museum. The event is free for Museum members and free with regular paid admission for non-members.
In October, visit Sendik’s Food Markets, purchase select products from Breadsmith, Fyffes, Kemps and Sargento. Show your receipt at the Museum to receive FREE admission to the Not-So-Scary Halloween. One admission per product. Please check bbcmkids.org for product information.
Holiday Kitchen
November 24, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Join the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum the day after Thanksgiving for a special event presented by Sendik’s Food Markets to celebrate cooking together, healthy eating and the importance of family meal time. Participate in a variety of hands-on workshops and learn the value of making good decisions when it comes to nutrition and the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. Lots of crafty projects, fun programs and delicious food samples will give the entire family a kick-start to healthy living this holiday season.

New Year’s Eve at Noon
December 29, 9 a.m.-noon
Celebrate 2018 early at the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum. Kids can make a party hat, create something festive in the Museum’s Be A Maker space and be wide awake when they toast the new year (with juice) as they sing, dance and countdown to the Museum’s annual New Year’s Eve at Noon ball drop. Weekly Programs
Birth through age 5 are critical years in a child’s development. In addition to special programs throughout the year, the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum’s weekly programs are a great way to promote early learning and have fun together. Space is limited. Tot Time: Recommended for ages 1-3
Every Thursday, 10:30-11 a.m.
There will be no Tot Time on Thursday, November 23
Tot Time features songs, stories, games and other activities for the Museum’s youngest visitors.
Pint-Size Science: Recommended for ages 2-5
September 13, October 18, November 15, and December 13: 10:30-11 a.m.
From the kitchen to the playground – and even in the car – science is all around us. This facilitated program features hands-on science discoveries through stories, songs and experiments.
It’s In the Bank!: Recommended for age 4 and older
September 12 & 26, October 10 & 24, November 7 & 21, and December 5 & 19: 11:30 a.m.
This facilitated program teaches children about earning, spending, saving and sharing. Children will be the contestants in a fast-paced game show that will help them develop their financial vocabulary and learn to make smart decisions.
Stories and Songs with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music: Recommended for all ages
September 1, 15 & 29, October 6, 13 & 27, November 3 & 17, and December 1, 15 & 29: 10:30-11:15 a.m.
Children’s imaginations will soar as they read and re-create storybook tales through drama, music and dance. This facilitated program will focus on beginning concepts of music, and explore pitch, volume and space through group and individual singing. Children will develop creativity as storytellers and build important skills in literacy, sequencing, and cooperation—and lay the foundations for a lifetime of enthusiasm for music and reading.
Animal Antics with the Zoological Society of Milwaukee: Recommended for all ages
October 19, November 28 and December 5: 10:30-11 a.m.
From animal senses to animal athletes, learn about animals from around the world with the Zoological Society of Milwaukee. This facilitated program features songs, games and special crafts and visits from live animals.
