Public Safety Hiring and the 2018 City Budget
There will continue to be entry-level hiring for all public safety positions.
The Fire and Police Commission (FPC) is in the midst of its first recruitment for the position of Firefighter in almost 10 years and is also currently accepting applications for Police Aide and Fire Cadet. The office has received numerous communications from the community concerned about how the proposed 2018 budget cuts to the Milwaukee Fire and Police Departments will impact hiring. The FPC would like to make it clear to all current and potential applicants that there will continue to be entry-level hiring for all public safety positions.
For both the Fire and Police Departments, as retirements occur moving forward, applicants from the above-mentioned recruitment efforts will fill those positions. While the exact number of recruits in each future class is unknown at this point, there is no doubt that there will be recruit classes for Firefighters, Police Officers and Fire Cadet and Police Aide apprenticeships. In December 2017 the first Police Officer recruit class from the March 2017 recruitment effort will commence.
The FPC encourages everyone to consider a career in Milwaukee’s protective services. By working for Milwaukee’s Fire or Police Departments you will earn a competitive salary, have a secure pension and retirement, have opportunity for promotion and advancement, and most importantly you’ll be making Milwaukee a better place every day.
