Intergovernmental Cooperation Council supports Mayor Barrett’s leadership on Employ Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – Today, the Intergovernmental Cooperation Council (ICC) voted to support Mayor Tom Barrett’s continued role as the Chief Elected Official overseeing Employ Milwaukee, the region’s workforce development board.

Earlier this month, Governor Scott Walker and the State of Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development requested the top elected officials of Milwaukee County municipalities designate the Chief Elected Official overseeing Employ Milwaukee. The ICC selected Mayor Barrett to continue leading the region’s workforce development efforts.

“Members of the ICC thoughtfully reviewed the alternatives, and I am pleased by their decision to support our successful workforce development efforts,” Mayor Barrett said. “We are all committed to providing family-supporting jobs and training opportunities to all Milwaukee residents. I appreciate the support from my fellow Mayors and leaders, and am looking forward to working with you all to continue building the region’s workforce for the future.”

The ICC is comprised of the Mayor, Village President or Administrator from each of the 19 municipalities inside Milwaukee County to share best practices in delivery of public services, to discuss ways in which to save tax money and enhance services through cooperative efforts, and to discuss and advocate for change in state and federal law that are of common interest to ICC members.

As the Chief Elected Official of Employ Milwaukee, Mayor Barrett engages in regional workforce development planning, appoints members of the Workforce Development Board (WDB), provides oversight of the One Stop Job Center system and youth, adult, and dislocated worker programming, aligns all investments in workforce development in Milwaukee County, and ensures that policies of the WDB become integrated into overall policies for economic development, education, and workforce development.
