Poetry in the Park on July 11th

Poetry in the Park’s 2017 season started with a bang in June with 115 in attendance, and we’re excited to keep the momentum high in July! Our July 11th lineup features four outstanding poets guaranteed to knock your socks off. Ed Werstein (Who Are We Then) came to poetry better late than never and is a member of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets. Tiffany Miller will inspire you with her blooming razzle-dazzle. UWM PhD candidate Peter Burzynski will bowl you over with the grotesque, outlandish carnival and sincerity of his stanzas. And Pushcart Prize winner (A Theory of Lipstick), author of the recent Grief Bone, Karla Huston, is the newly minted Wisconsin Poet Laureate. It is said her poetry screams in whispers.

August 8th’s Poetry in the Park lineup features four poets that will tickle your senses and rattle your brain! Destinny Fletcher (Black Girl Be Storm) is a force to be reckoned with in Milwaukee’s poetry scene! Richard Meier (Shelly Gave Jane a Guitar; the Pure Block of the Whole Imaginary) wraps his observations in rhythmic funky surprise! UWM Professor Mauricio Kilwein-Guevara (Poema; Autobiography of So-and-So) brings a sharp and beautiful clarity to the chaotic world! And Lisa Fishman (24 Pages and Other Poems; F L O W E R C A R T) tugs at the corners of language, expression, and image in poems that will quench your mind’s thirst! Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind lineup of poets on Tuesday, August 8 at 6:30 PM in Juneau Park!

And finally on September 12th Poetry in the Park invites Br!NK (a week-long Renaissance Theaterworks residency dedicated to advancing the work of Midwestern women playwrights) to do a staged reading of THE ENDURANCE OF LIGHT by Amanda Petefish-Schrag followed by a talkback with the playwright. Briefly in the play, Sophie, a scientist, refuses to leave her bed. Instead, she spends her time lost in piles of books, trying to discover the reason for her multiple miscarriages. Her husband and her mother desperately try to connect with her, unaware that her bedroom has become a surreal landscape where Sophie, along with Sir Ernest Shackleton and his ship, The Endurance, are perpetually trapped in the Antarctic ice. Guided by an irreverent Albert Einstein and spirited Hildegard Von Bingen, Sophie must navigate the mysterious forces that now threaten to trap her forever as past and present, faith and science, collide.

For each event meet around the Solomon Juneau statue at the end of E. Kilbourn Ave. overlooking Lake Michigan. Please join us with your blankets, chairs, beverages, snacks, pets, and pals!
