Mural repainted by MPS students, parents, staff and neighbors to be unveiled Wednesday
Sherman Multicultural Arts School mural unveiling set for 9 a.m. at the school, 5110 W. Locust Street, Milwaukee 53210
A Wednesday, May 22 unveiling will celebrate the two-year long process to repaint a mural outside Milwaukee Public Schools’ Sherman Multicultural Arts School.
In collaboration with Arts@Large and the Sherman Park Community Association, students from the school joined parents, staff and community members to paint the mural along N. 51st Street between Locust and Chambers streets in the city’s Sherman Park area.
The project was spearheaded by the artist of the original mural, Reynaldo Hernandez, and local artist Tia Richardson. The artists worked with Sherman art teacher Gina Glembin to instruct students and introduce students’ ideas to the project, which like the school, has a multiculturalism theme. It includes depictions of people from various backgrounds, animals and musical instruments.
“We wanted to work on a project that would bring the school and the community together,” Sherman Principal Dr. Anita Sparks said. “We’re calling it a community wall – a wall that reflects our multicultural neighborhood and our multicultural school. We are extremely grateful for all of our partners including Arts@Large, Public Allies and the Sherman Park Community Association.”
The new mural will be unveiled at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22 at the school, 5110 W. Locust Street, Milwaukee 53210. A multicultural fair and open house is set for 5:30 p.m. on the same day, during which students will showcase what they have learned about the continents around the world this year.
