Plea deal in cavity searches case is a disappointment

The plea deal reached by the District Attorney with former Milwaukee Police Officer Michael Vagnini is a disappointment. Mr. Vagnini’s actions, along with those of the other officers involved, were not only reprehensible, but a disgrace to the badge, and have strained the already challenged relations the department has with the community.

Mr. Vagnini’s dismissal from his job, alone, was not a sufficient punishment, and the plea deal does not reflect the crimes he actually committed. Mr. Vagnini and the other officers involved committed these acts while on duty. As public servants, these individuals should be held to a higher standard than the general public.

I hope that when the time comes for a judge to sentence Mr. Vagnini for the crimes to which he has pleaded no contest, the judge’s sentencing reflects the crimes he actually committed. The victims of these heinous acts should be able to feel that the justice system is working on their behalf.
