Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs has been elected to serve as Region 7 Director of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) for the National League of Cities.
Alderwoman Coggs was elected to the post last week during the National League of Cities’ Congress of Cities and Exposition in Boston. The annual NLC conference brings city leaders together to share resources, network and discuss the challenges and issues facing cities today.
“I am truly honored by this election, and I am looking forward to bringing my insights and ideas to the initiatives and activities of NBC-LEO,” Alderwoman Coggs said.
The Region 7 of NBC-LEO includes Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
NBC-LEO was created in 1970 to represent the interests of African American elected officials. NBC-LEO’s objectives include increasing African American participation on NLC’s steering and policy committees to ensure that policy and program recommendations reflect African American concerns and benefit their communities.
The organization also works independently with its members to inform them on issues affecting the African American community and helps to devise ways to achieve their community objectives through legislation and direct action. NBC-LEO conducts its annual meetings in conjunction with NLC’s Congress of Cities and Congressional City Conference, and will hold a conference in Milwaukee in August 2013.
Alderwoman Coggs is the youngest woman ever elected to the Common Council and is currently the youngest of its 15 members. She is also the only woman serving on the council at this time. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School, and attended Fisk University, where she graduated Cum Laude.
