Moore, Chu Reintroduce EITC Age Parity Act to Expand Tax Credit to Younger and Older Workers

Representative Gwen Moore (WI-04) and Representative Judy Chu (CA-28) introduced the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Age Parity Act to eliminate a barrier preventing younger and older workers without children from accessing the EITC.

Last year, 24 million workers and families received the credit, pulling millions out of poverty. But under current law, workers under the age of 25 and over the age of 65 without children are not eligible for the credit. The EITC Age Parity Act expands this credit’s eligibility so these workers can finally receive permanent support.

“At a time when American families and workers are struggling with higher costs for just about everything, our tax laws should not be taxing workers into poverty. That is why I have long championed updates to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), one of our nation’s largest anti-poverty tools. While the American Rescue Plan Act made important changes to the EITC, including allowing younger and older adults without children to benefit from this refundable credit, those temporary changes expired, depriving some of our most vulnerable workers of critical assistance. The EITC Age Parity Act would permanently allow younger and older workers to benefit from the EITC, a crucial first step in ensuring that our tax code can better serve all our workers,” said Rep. Moore.

“The EITC is one of the most impactful and transformative anti-poverty tools we have at our disposal. Unfortunately, arbitrary age limits exclude millions of hardworking Americans who could benefit from it greatly,” said Rep. Chu. “Right now, a 23-year-old stocking shelves and a 66-year-old still working to make ends meet, neither with children at home, are shut out of the EITC for no reason other than their age. I’m proud to reintroduce the EITC Age Parity Act with Rep. Moore to lift more families out of poverty and put more money back in the pockets of millions of workers.”

Congresswoman Moore remains a champion for enhancing the EITC. In addition to introducing the EITC Age Parity Act, Congresswoman has introduced legislation, the Worker Relief and Credit Reform Act (the WRCR Act), which would expand the EITC to provide more support for more people by increasing the maximum credit for all filers, changing age limits to benefit young and older workers without children, as well making low-income students and certain unpaid caregivers eligible for the credit.
