Where do you work and what makes your role awesome?
I am a reporter for Wisconsin Public Radio. I would say my role is awesome because I’m bringing news that matters to people across the state. News never sleeps and there is never a dull moment in journalism. I get to talk to people from all walks of life as a reporter and you get to meet so many interesting people.
How long have you lived in Milwaukee and what brought you here?
I am a newbie to the city. I moved here at the start of the August, so it’s been about two months. I moved here from Georgia but went to school in Missouri. For some reason I keep moving farther north. I came here to work for Wisconsin Public Radio and have enjoyed every moment. After spending four years in a landlocked state during college it is so nice to live right on Lake Michigan. I guess the biggest downside is the winter. After growing up in a state that might get snow every other year and has very mild winters, this will definitely be a challenge.
What is something that is missing from our community that you would love to see implemented?
More parking! I kind of have to laugh at how trivial that is but I guess it comes with the territory of living downtown. Searching for a parking spot after work is usually the longest part of the commute and I can only imagine it gets worse when it snows. But considering my biggest qualm so far is street parking things must be going well. Also, I guess I would like more tips on places to find good breakfast food. I am still in search of an amazing pancake or a delicious waffle.
Let’s take a dive in the imagination well for a second. I would probably create some type of attraction on the lake, like a boardwalk. I haven’t been here during the summer yet so that may already exist. But adding a Ferris Wheel, some food vendors, mini-attractions, and prize booths would be fun to have. Especially during the time that Summerfest was here. Plus it would be such a great view and an awesome place to meet people and make some memories.
What is your biggest hope for this city?
My biggest hope for this city is that it finds ways to continue to thrive. Milwaukee doesn’t typically jump out to people as being a place to move to, especially being Chicago’s northern neighbor but there are so many things the city has to offer once you’re on the ground. I found a great local rec league in Brewtown Recreation, there are plenty of bars around to have fun at any night of the week, the city is very walkable, you have Lake Michigan at your fingertips, and there are lots of places for pizza, beer, and cheese. If you’re an avid sports fan like me, the Bucks and Brewers reside here, the Badgers have been playing great and the Packers are a couple hours north (Go Falcons!). I hope other young adults and graduates give Milwaukee a chance because it sure does deserve it.
What neighborhood do you live in and why do you love it?
I live on the Lower East Side of town right next to Brady Street. I think the last two words of that sentence play a big role why I love it. I’m separated from the lake by a quick walk, I have some nice spots to eat and bars to attend in my backyard, and I am a short walk away from Water Street. Milwaukee is very walkable and the Bublr Bikes help in getting place to place without having to worry about driving and finding parking. I am also fresh out of college so some type of nightlife is a big plus. It’s also great to be surrounded by pizza parlors that don’t close until early in the morning.
