Marquette real estate students win regional case competition
Marks third consecutive victory at NAIOP challenge
MILWAUKEE — A team of Marquette University real estate students from the College of Business Administration took first-place honors the NAIOP Minnesota Case Competition for the third straight year. Marquette bested teams from St. Cloud State University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Northern Iowa, the University of St. Thomas and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, is the leading organization for developers, owners and related professionals in office, industrial and mixed-use real estate. The Minnesota chapter each year hosts the university case competition, in which student teams pitch commercial real estate development plans for a specific site.
This year’s site was The Link in Edina, Minnesota, a 12-acre, five-parcel suburban office park site with high visibility.
The team, which comprised Sarah McPherson, Kris Kucharski, Nicole Patel and Michael Garrity, was given several assumptions including land cost, adjacent uses and environmental considerations. They were then asked to address the development plan, construction timeline, budget, pro-forma, leasing plan and schedule, financial plan, and market analysis.
Each team had 10 minutes to present to a panel of judges from United Properties, The Davis Group, CBRE, Eberhardt Advisory, Marren Properties and BMO Harris Bank. The judges chose three finalists who then presented to an audience of almost 200 attendees.
“The competitions are the culmination of more than two months of intensive classroom work under the direction of adjunct instructor Dan Cowell, as well as numerous real estate professionals,” said Chris Korjenek, associate director of Marquette’s Center for Real Estate. “I’m proud of our team for all of their hard work and dedication—it feels great to bring the trophy back home again.”
