One Year Later: Holding Reckless Drivers Accountable
Statement of Alderman Lamont Westmoreland November 6, 2026
One year ago, MCO 101-24.9, legislation I authored to address reckless driving in Milwaukee, officially went into effect. The goal was straightforward: Give law enforcement another tool to hold reckless drivers accountable and make our streets safer.
Twelve months later, we have a full year of results, and the numbers demonstrate that this ordinance is making an impact.
Over the past year, this enforcement tool has resulted in:
- 354 vehicles impounded
- 27 vehicles remain unclaimed at the tow lot
- 1 vehicle auctioned
- 2 vehicles recycled
- $66,564.11 collected in impoundment fees
- $14,804.80 in previously outstanding citations paid
- 115 previously unregistered vehicles registered before being released from the tow lot
- None of the impounded vehicles were stolen – and there were also no repeat offenders
These numbers represent more than impounded vehicles and dollars collected. They represent consequences. They represent accountability. And they represent an additional tool being used to address behavior that puts innocent people and families at risk every day.
Perhaps just as important, 115 vehicles that were operating without proper registration were brought into compliance before being returned to the road.
I have said from the beginning that reckless driving is not going to be solved by one ordinance, one department, or one elected official. It requires a comprehensive approach, consistent enforcement, and a willingness to hold people accountable.
I am proud to have authored this legislation, but I am not declaring victory. One year of results is encouraging, but our work is far from finished. We must continue looking for ways to make Milwaukee’s streets safer for everyone.
Accountability matters. Consequences matter. And the safety of our residents must remain a priority.
