Council Adopts budget Amendment Aimed at Grocery Store and Pharmacy Retention
Council adopts budget amendment aimed at grocery store and pharmacy retention Today (Friday, November 6), the Common Council during its budget adoption meeting unanimously approved amendment 29A, authored by Alderman DiAndre Jackson. The amendment adds a new Commercial Grocery Store Pharmacy Retention special purpose account with $1.8 million of funding to address the retention and attraction of grocery stores and pharmacies in the city of Milwaukee.
“During the last several years, neighborhoods across the city have seen grocery stores and pharmacies flee in waves, leaving residents with a gap to fill, particularly seniors, households without access to reliable transportation, and communities experiencing economic and health disparities,” said Alderman Jackson. “Access to full-service grocery stores and pharmacies is essential to public health, food security, medication access, and overall quality of life for Milwaukee residents. This will give the city an additional tool to support grocery stores and pharmacies that many residents depend on.”
“I’d like to thank my colleagues for their unanimous support of this amendment. This is an issue that impacts all of our districts,” Alderman Jackson added.
The intent is to offset the funding for this amendment with an increase to the withdrawal from the Tax Stabilization Fund, which will require a resolution to be adopted by the Common Council. This would make the amendment budget neutral with no impact on property taxes.
