Council adopts budget amendment funding We Energies feasibility study The Common Council today (Friday, November 6) adopted an amended 2027 city budget of approximately $2.2 billion. Amendment 92B, authored by Alderman Alex Brower and unanimously adopted by the Common Council, provides $1,350,000 in general obligation borrowing for a We Energies feasibility study. The study will examine the feasibility of enacting Chapter 197 of the Wisconsin Statutes, which permits the municipal acquisition of energy utility assets, with the direction of the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee and following passage of a public referendum to that effect.

“We Energies’ days in this town are numbered. We will soon have public ownership of our public utilities, and this forthcoming feasibility study is the first step in that process,” said Alderman Brower. “This study will examine, in depth, the needs for the City of Milwaukee to establish its own public utility, and what the benefits would be to ratepayers. We look forward to a thorough process that gives more information and answers.”

“I also want to thank my colleagues for their overwhelming support of this budget amendment, and I call on Mayor Johnson to support this item,” Alderman Brower added.

The budget adopted by the Common Council, including amendment 92B, will go to Mayor Cavalier Johnson for his signature or any vetoes, which must be issued by close of business on Tuesday, November 17.
