Collaborative Approach Needed to Ensure Neighborhood Safety

Statement from Alderman Alex Brower June 26, 2026

This week, we have seen a pair of tragic acts of violence on the Lower East Side. On Tuesday, a triple shooting resulted in two people being injured and one person dying on North Van Buren, just south of Brady. Then just this morning, another person was shot in the area of Farwell and Brady.

I want to send my condolences to the family and friends of the person who lost their life earlier this week, and wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured in these shootings.

We must condemn gun violence in the strongest possible manner. The unfortunate reality is that we have a proliferation of guns in our community, and people have become too quick to use them to resolve an argument or dispute. This is backed by a system of State and Federal lawmakers who are unwilling and uninterested in restricting access to guns, and a court system that continues to remove restrictions on firearms under the guise of expanding Second Amendment rights.

I am calling on our State Legislature to push for reform of our gun laws, including universal background checks, waiting periods, and other common-sense measures.

Locally, we are working to enact plans to curb violence. Just yesterday, the Brady Street Business Improvement District, in conjunction with my office, the Milwaukee Police Department, local businesses, and other stakeholders, launched a six-week Summer Safety Pilot Program. The program will focus on addressing ongoing concerns related to reckless driving, loud music, loitering, underage drinking, open intoxicants, and other late-night disruptive behaviors in the area.

The pilot program will include increased visibility and coordination among stakeholders, enhanced enforcement of existing ordinances by the Milwaukee Police Department, public safety messaging, and business engagement efforts, among others.

Additionally, to discuss these issues and hear from neighbors, I will be hosting a town hall meeting for District 3 residents focused on public safety. Those interested are invited to join me on Wednesday, July 15, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Falcon Bowl, 801 E. Clarke St.

To ensure Brady Street, our district, and our city remain the vibrant, diverse place we all know and love, we must all be part of the conversation and be willing to roll up our sleeves and be part of the solution.
