Baldwin Delivers $6.6 Million to Improve Road Safety Across Wisconsin
Funding comes from Baldwin-backed Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
WISCONSIN – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) announced Wisconsin communities will receive $6.6 million in federal funding to make their roads safer. The funding, from the Baldwin-backed Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will help communities across the state make targeted safety improvements and develop comprehensive plans for long-term investments.
“Whether you’re driving to work, walking to school, or biking around your neighborhood, every Wisconsinite deserves to get where they need to go and make it home safely,” said Senator Tammy Baldwin. “Our communities know their roads best, and that’s why I fought to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to bring investments like these back home to Wisconsin. I’m proud to deliver this funding to reduce accidents and make our streets safer for everyone.”
The federal funding, from the Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program, has been awarded to the following Wisconsin communities:
St. Croix County: $4,666,135 to implement rural highway safety improvements on its Action Plan high-injury network, targeting 7 hazardous county highway segments spanning more than 84 miles, 6 intersections, 9 curves, and 14 high-friction surface treatment locations. Improvements include centerline and edge line rumble strips, wider edge lines, lighting, chevrons, fluorescent signing, and a roundabout at County Trunk Highways A and U.
The project also includes Planning and Demonstration funds for 4 corridor studies on County Trunk Highways A, E, I, and F. These studies will evaluate traffic operations, crash patterns, access management, and future growth to develop long-range safety recommendations and inform future Action Plan updates.
Waukesha County: $800,000 to develop a countywide Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and conduct 3 supplemental planning activities. Work includes crash data analysis, development of a high-injury network, public and stakeholder engagement, policy and procedure review, and prioritization of safety improvements, plus studies of school zones and railroad crossings, a rural highway database, and traffic studies at 10 high-injury network intersections to identify future safety strategies.
City of Janesville: $296,000 to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan for the urban areas of Janesville and Milton and conduct demonstration activities on Milton Avenue in Janesville. Work includes a safety analysis, public engagement, policy review, and a pilot of rest-on-red technology to evaluate speed and cruising deterrence and inform future safety initiatives.
City of Wauwatosa: $280,000 to update its ADA Transition Plan. The supplemental planning activities will assess curb ramps, sidewalks, crossings, transit access points, and Accessible Pedestrian Signal systems citywide and use the results to prioritize future safety and accessibility investments.
Marathon County: $240,000 to update its existing roadway safety plan into a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan covering countywide roads. The work includes crash analysis, development of a high-injury network, public and stakeholder engagement, policy and procedure review, countermeasure prioritization, implementation and funding strategies, and plan adoption to address fatal and serious injury crashes, especially roadway departure, intersection, speed-related, and vulnerable road user crashes.
Manitowoc County: $200,000 to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan for the countywide roadway network. Work includes safety analysis, a high-injury network, stakeholder engagement, policy review, strategy prioritization, performance measures, and a final Action Plan to address fatal and serious injury crashes involving all roadway users.
City of Shawano: $120,000 to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan for the citywide roadway network. Work includes crash and high-injury network analysis, stakeholder engagement, policy review, strategy prioritization, performance measures, and a final Action Plan to address fatal and serious injury crashes and guide future safety investments.
