Colorful openings and closings
MAM's photography survey "Color Rush" opens Friday, while exhibits at UWM and Anaba wrap up.
An exhibition opening, a couple of closings, and an open house are not to be missed this weekend.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21
Warhol, et al.
UWM Art History Gallery, Mitchell Hall, Room 154
3203 N. Downer Avenue
UWM’s Warhol, et al., which we’ve mentioned in prior Art Dates, closes this weekend to make room for an upcoming printmaking exhibition that ties into SGC International’s upcoming Print: MKE exhibition. Don’t miss this last opportunity to see these works by Warhol and his contemporaries.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22
Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America
Milwaukee Art Museum
700 N. Art Museum Drive
This comprehensive exhibit is the big opening of the week: an extensive survey of the evolution of color photography from its development at the turn of the century to its widespread adoption by the early ’80s. Whether you’re a photography expert or aficionado, or just the regular, everyday art-lover, you’ll find something great here. The show runs through May 19, 2013.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23
Nut Factory Open House 2013
3720 N. Fratney St.
This once-yearly open house of artists’ studios features paintings, photography, video, installations and more. The name comes from its original purpose – a factory that processed nuts – not a reference to the artists working, if that’s what you’re thinking. The open house runs 7 to 11 p.m.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24
James Steeno’s Similtudes
Anaba Tea Room, Garden Room, lower level
2107 E. Capitol Drive, Shorewood
This weekend is also your last chance to drop into Anaba for Similitudes, an exhibition by James Steeno consisting of various watercolors, drawings and paper collages made of upcycled, discarded printer papers and junk mail. Steeno’s exhibit will be replaced by On the Horizon, a series of oil landscapes by Beki Borman. Steeno’s exhibition will close at 3 p.m. Sunday.
