Piggly Wiggly in Bay View is set to debut a multimillion-dollar renovation this weekend, welcoming shoppers for the first time to its freshly revamped store at 123 W. Oklahoma Ave.
The project, guided by feedback from neighbors and store employees, includes aesthetic updates such as new flooring, paint, signage, aisle markers and displays, along with a revised layout and expanded inventory of products.
“We’ve really been trying to make it a little bit more modern, more relevant and overall a better shopping experience,” said Terry Goins, director of marketing and advertising for Piggly Wiggly Midwest.
Among major changes, the store’s in-house bakery, Panaderia Azteca, now occupies a more prominent space near the main entrance, while the deli and butcher displays have been rebuilt with visual appeal and accessibility in mind.
“We wanted to make sure people can see the meat — the star of the show,” Goins said, also noting that a portion of the deli is now dedicated to grab-and-go items, so shoppers can access fresh meat and cheese even when the counter is closed.
The store has also expanded its selection of produce, Wisconsin brands, organic items and gluten-free choices based on neighbors’ requests, and has introduced an updated layout with wider aisles, new lighting and a more logical flow between departments.
The building, originally constructed in 1984, was last renovated “at least 20 years ago,” according to Goins, who said Piggly Wiggly has remained open to shoppers for much of the renovation, save for a two-week stretch in early May.
Employees remained on-site during that time to assist with tasks such as moving inventory and shelving while flooring was installed, Goins said.
As of Thursday morning, work was still progressing in sections of the store, including a new break room for workers located in the former bakery space.
Goins remained hopeful crews would wrap up before the official opening on Saturday. “We’re rushing to the finish line,” he said.
The Bay View project follows the April renovation of Piggly Wiggly on Durand Avenue in Racine as the brand works on a broader regional refresh of its portfolio. “We’ll tick them off a couple at a time,” Goins said.
Grand Opening Event
Piggly Wiggly will host a grand opening ribbon-cutting and celebration Saturday, June 6, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., inviting shoppers to tour the refreshed store and mingle with special guests.
That includes Bernie Brewer and Mr. Pig, along with Marquette University men’s basketball players Adrien Stevens and Nigel James Jr., who will participate in a meet-and-greet from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The University of Wisconsin Marching Band is set to perform at 9 a.m.
Throughout the day, guests can observe as a professional cheese carver turns a 300-pound wheel of Wisconsin cheddar into the likeness of Mr. Pig. The festivities will also include product sampling, discounts and giveaways for the first 250 attendees.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Goins said. “We’re really trying to drive some traffic to our store and let people see the changes that we’ve made.”
