Spawning lake sturgeon are very picky about water velocities. The ancient fish prefer velocities between 0.5 and 1.5 meters per second. That’s a range of about 1.1 to 3.4 miles per hour. If the water is too fast or too slow, they are simply not in the mood for love. Houghton’s work measured and modeled stream velocities under different flow conditions to identify reaches of river that could be promising for sturgeon spawning habitat.
