The 5th annual Milwaukee Film Festival is in full swing, so check out our ever-updating daily guide to what's next on the big screen.
Sunday, October 6
TCD Pick: The Act of Killing
The Act of Killing is, without a doubt, one of the strangest films screening at this year’s festival. Director Joshua Oppenheimer takes us to Indonesia, where he has convinced the leaders of the paramilitary organization to re-enact the millions of murders they committed in order to take control of the country in the 1960s, as if they were making a movie about it. Those founding fathers now view themselves as national heroes, but as the documentary proceeds, they – and we along with them – are forced to truly consider their actions outside the contexts they have painted for themselves.
The Act of Killing screens only once: Sunday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m. at the Downer Theatre.

Extended Preview: Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me
When you think of significant, culture-changing bands from the 1970s, you probably don’t add a little band called Big Star to your list. Trouble is, you should – the power pop band may not have gotten much attention at the time, but their three increasingly complex albums foreshadowed nothing short of the entire alternative rock genre, and many of the most seminal bands of the ’80s and the ’90s consider these guys key in their very development. So stop reading this, start reading Sahan Jayasuriya’s breakdown of the band’s first major doc, Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, and get ready, because you’re not going to want to miss them this time around.
Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, screens twice: Sunday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m. at Fox-Bay Cinema, and Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 4:45 p.m. at the Downer Theatre.
