TCD’s Milwaukee Film Fest Picks
The 5th annual Milwaukee Film Festival is in full swing, so check out our ever-updating daily guide to what's next on the big screen.
Sunday, September 29
TCD Pick: Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me
Most everyone we’ve talked to about Elaine Stritch remembers her most readily from her Emmy-winning turn as Jack Donaghy’s devoted but overbearing mother in 30 Rock, but that’s only one of the most recent roles the acclaimed, acerbic actor has put her unique stamp on since her beginnings on Broadway with roles in Pal Joey and Stephen Sondheim’s Company. Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me, directed by Chiemi Karasawa in her feature debut, follows Stritch in public and private, a never-saccharine tribute to her career. Oh, and did we mention Stritch herself will be at Sunday’s screening?
Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me will screen only once, at 7 p.m at the Oriental Theatre.

TCD Pick: The Angels’ Share
Heist flicks aren’t the rarest genre, but with The Angels’ Share, director Ken Loach has put a new spin on a classic style. The film follows Robbie, a recently released criminal from Scotland trying to put his life back together alongside a group of companions met during community service. To do so, he hatches a plan for an unusual heist: a few siphoned bottles of exceedingly rare whisky, just enough to fund a better life. And best yet, it’s no sober action-only flick; there’s enough comedy and heartwarming moments to please any stripe of audience.
The Angels’ Share will be screened three times: Sunday, Sept. 29, at 8:30 p.m. at Fox-Bay Cinema; Saturday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m. at Fox-Bay Cinema (rush line only); and Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 8:15 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre.

Extended Preview: Citizen Koch
Years after the Citizens United ruling, Act 10 protests and Scott Walker recall efforts, Wisconsin and national politics remain as volatile as they’ve ever been. TCD writer and editor Gene Cawley takes a look at Citizen Koch, a documentary that ties those events together to illustrate the influence of corporate involvement in the democratic process.
