Quality Over Quantity
There's only a few theater and music events on stage this weekend, including a 'Grey Gardens" musical and Youth Lagoon, but consider it an appetizer for the fall arts rush next week.
Theater
Grey Gardens: The Musical makes its Midwest debut this Wednesday at Off The Wall Theater. This show is based off the lives of the two Edith Bouvier Beales, a mother-daughter pair of infamous recluses related to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” first came to the public eye when a documentary film named for their dilapidated mansion premiered in 1975; the musical of the same name opened in 2006, the first Broadway musical ever adapted from a documentary. Off the Wall’s staging opens tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 10) and runs through Sept. 22. Tickets are $30 online, and are expected to sell out quickly.
Soulstice Theater, in St. Francis, presents Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, the backwards-told story of a woman who turns to a former lover for comfort as her marriage dissolves. This show runs from Sept. 12 to 28; tickets are $20, $18 for students/seniors, and are available by contacting Soulstice Theater.
Menopause: The Musical makes a stop in Milwaukee as part of its ten year run. This Friday at 7 p.m., join four women for the highs and lows of their lives set to show-stopping numbers. Tickets to this celebratory look at womanhood, playing at the Milwaukee Theatre, start at $35 online.
Music
Youth Lagoon will play at The Pabst Theater this Thursday at 7 PM. Trevor Powers is the man behind the music, playing which critics call “dreamy indie pop.” Youth Lagoon was signed to Fat Possum Records in 2010 and released that album The Year of Hibernation in 2011. Tickets are available online for $12.
