The fourth annual Milwaukee Film Festival begins next week, bringing cinema of all shapes and sizes to Cream City. With 15 days of screenings and over 100 films, it can be a challenge to decide what to see. That’s where this Flick by Flick guide comes in, breaking down the festival’s films by their opening night and providing a summary and trailer (when possible) for each. After all, there’s at least one film for everyone in the festival – it’s just a matter of figuring out which is for you.

This is Part 1 of our guide, covering the first weekend of premieres (Sept. 27-30). For the remainder of the festival, check out Part 2, which spans the month of October. In both guides, we’ve chosen to simplify most of the MFF’s official film categories, although films in their “Spotlight Presentations” series are noted with asterisks (*). For more information on any of these films, click through to their official websites or stop by the MFF website. And don’t think this is the extent of our festival coverage – we’ll be reviewing a variety of films in the weeks to come, as well as covering the MFF opening night party at Discovery World.

Films will screen at one or more of the festival’s three theaters: Fox-Bay Cinema, 334 E. Silver Spring Dr., Whitefish Bay; Downer Theatre, 2589 Downer Ave.; or the Oriental Theatre, 2230 N. Farwell Ave. For tickets, visit any of their box offices, call (414) 727-8468 or check the MFF website.
