After a long spate of cloudy, rainy days, summer returned to Milwaukee last Tuesday — just in time for the Bay View Neighborhood Association’s weekly “Chill on the Hill” music series at the Humboldt Park bandshell in Bay View.

After a roll in the grass and a glass of chardonnay, audiences witnessed an opening act of baton twirlers and drum corps courtesy the Daley Debutantes, followed by the all-female rockabilly group Crazy Rocket Fuel.

Their Daley Debutante’s Majorettes gave a smiling flair to the proceedings that matched any you would find generations earlier in America. Those who arrived early had a special (if brief) treat: during the sound check, Crazy Rocket Fuel lead singer Kari Bloom exchanged musical pleasantries with the youngest practicing Majorettes, who danced and twirled to the strumming of her guitar.
Crazy Rocket Fuel’s snappy numbers honor the Rockabilly tradition with a decidedly modern twist. If there is anything to say about this band, it’s in the way that they worked the crowd — to put it simply, they were a lot of fun. To quote Alice Wilson, a Milwaukee local on twitter (@bobosnakes), regarding the experience of Crazy Rocket Fuel, “Woohoo!”

To find out more about the Chill on the Hill series, visit the BVNA website here. Tonight’s performance is Independence Day themed, with a full-on show by the American Legion Band celebrating their 50th year. Opening acts begin at 6 p.m., with headliners performing 6:30-8:30 p.m.
