The Montello Historic Preservation Society (MHPS) is sponsoring The Hidden History Mural Trail to bring a positive visual message to pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists traveling throughout Marquette County, Wisconsin.

Their goal is to oversee the creation of a mural trail as a positive expression of its communities and to bring people together from the local neighborhoods in the process. Thirty or more murals are projected over the next three years. For year one, they plan eight smaller and three larger murals.

This is an open competition. The artists chosen will be Wisconsin residents and will reflect diversity in style, media, ethnicity, age and experience. Professional artists with previous experience creating outdoor murals are preferable, but all may apply unless otherwise indicated on the specific site application.

Eligibility. The artist must reside in the State of Wisconsin. Marquette County artists will be given special consideration. Also, it will be indicated whether or not artist teams may apply or if the artist must have previous experience in public art.

Selection Criteria. How the artist’s idea fits into the specific goals for a project is always considered when selection a finalist. However, the following general criteria also apply:

  • Artistic quality of personal work
  • Relationship of a proposed site specific work to its environment
  • Media appropriateness for proposed project and site
  • Public safety, durability, and accessibility issues of the proposed project
