Dr. Gocmen will present research which examines how open space conservation subdivisions achieve their intended goals of creating environmentally sensitive development patterns. The work investigates the environmental merits of 54 Waukesha County conservation subdivisions built between 1990 and 2005, 26 of which are paired with conventional subdivisions for an additional comparative analysis. The investigation uses spatial data and analyzes the subdivision designs for land preservation and water quality benefits. Asli Gocmen is an assistant professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and a GIS Specialist with UW – Extension’s Community, Natural Resources, and Economic Development Program. Originally from Ankara, Turkey, she has been in the U.S. since 1992. Before she joined UW in 2006, she received a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan, both in planning, and practiced as a GIS specialist and planner at a county planning agency in Ohio. Her teaching and research interests include ecological land planning, human dimensions of natural resource protection, and GIS use in urban and environmental planning.
