The Business Journal of Milwaukee is reporting that Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has been released from Froedtert Hospital and that he received a call earlier today from President Obama.

Additional details have emerged about the Saturday night incident that left Barrett seriously injured including that at one point he thought his life was in danger.

According to jsonline.com, Barrett’s brother John said today that the assailant, who police believe was Anthony Peters, 20, of West Allis, threatened to use a gun and punched Barrett in his stomach so hard that he bent over.

John Barrett said that the man then told the mayor to lie face down on the ground and “this is when Tom thinks ‘Yikes, this guy could kill me’.”

At this point, according to John Barrett, the mayor started throwing punches but the man took out a police-style metal baton and began beating Barrett in his head, arms and body.

John Barrett also shared additional details about his brother’s condition. Mayor Barrett apparently lost several teeth as a result of the beating he received on Saturday night and will require plastic surgery to his face. He also needed staples to the back of his head and the surgery on Sunday lasted three hours.

Barrett issued a statement thanking the Milwaukee police and the staff of Froedtert Hospital and expressed relief that the grandmother and child who were being threatened by his assailant were unharmed.

Barrett said he was looking forward to some rest before returning to work.
