Duffy’s Dodge: Rep. Sean Duffy Refuses Six Debates Proposed By Mary Hoeft, But Asked For 20 Debates When He Ran In 2010

In an election year where so much is at stake for Wisconsinites, it is crucial for the people of the 7th Congressional District to hear from both candidates on the issues that matter.

MADISON – After days of mere silence from Rep. Sean Duffy in the wake of a challenge from Mary Hoeft to engage in six debates, Duffy finally responded to the candidate’s request. In an interview with WAOW this week, Duffy claimed that two debates are enough, a striking departure from his 2010 run for Congress when Duffy demanded not one, not two, but twenty debates. [1] [2]

In a press release last week, Mary Hoeft challenged Duffy to six debates saying, “the people of the 7th Congressional District deserve a representative who can address their needs and fight for them in Washington DC.”  However, it’s clear that Rep. Sean Duffy is afraid to face the music and defend his record in front of the voters in his own district.

Duffy’s dodge is an indication of just how out-of-touch he has become while being in Washington D.C. for the last six years. During his first run for Congress, Duffy challenged his opponent to twenty debates with one in each district, criticizing his opponent as unwilling in an interview with the Wausau Daily Herald in 2010.

In an election year where so much is at stake for Wisconsinites, it is crucial for the people of the 7th Congressional District to hear from both candidates on the issues that matter. Hoeft’s proposed six debates will give the voters in all corners of the district the opportunity to hear from the candidates and decide for themselves who will best represent them in Washington.

“Rep. Sean Duffy has become the kind of DC insider who runs for office and returns home completely out-of-touch with his own district.” Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesman Brandon Weathersby said on Thursday. “There is too much at stake in this election for Duffy’s dodging. It’s time for Rep. Duffy to do the right thing for the voters in his district and make his positions clear in six debates throughout the district.”
