Yes, Republicans Just Voted To Cut Medicaid
MADISON, Wis. — Tonight, Derrick Van Orden and Bryan Steil joined House Republicans in passing a budget resolution that calls for $2 trillion in cuts—including as much as $880 billion from Medicaid. While Republicans like Derrick Van Orden continue to insist that they are not cutting billions from Medicaid, the size of the cuts demanded by the budget resolution make it impossible for Medicaid to go untouched.
Of the $2 trillion in total cuts demanded by the House Republican budget resolution, $880 billion must be cut by the House Energy & Commerce Committee, which oversees funding for Medicaid. The House Energy & Commerce Committee only oversees $200 billion in non-Medicaid spending—meaning if Republicans zeroed out all other spending, they would still need to cut $680 billion from Medicaid.
Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Joe Oslund issued the following statement:
“The numbers don’t lie: Derrick Van Orden and Bryan Steil just voted to cut Medicaid, full stop, and the impact for Wisconsin families could be devastating. It is mathematically impossible for Republicans to cut the amount of spending called for in their budget resolution without making cuts to Medicaid. The priorities of Wisconsin Republicans in DC are clear: cancel doctors’ appointments for sick kids to help pay for Elon Musk’s tax cut.”NOTE: This press release was submitted to Urban Milwaukee and was not written by an Urban Milwaukee writer. Apr 29th, 2026 by Democratic Party of Wisconsin"Every election was already an emergency—SCOTUS just made them five-alarm fires. Wisconsin must elect a Democratic Governor and Attorney General alongside majorities in the State Senate and Assembly to safeguard our democracy, or we will hand the GOP the pen to gerrymander as they have before and draw themselves an 8-0 congressional delegation."

Rep Van Orden is in District 3, which includes Eau Claire, La Crosse and parts of central Wisconsin; and Rep Steil is in District 1, which includes all of southeastern Wisconsin, including Racine, Kenosha, southernmost Milwaukee County, Beloit, Janesville, Elkhorn….
