On Sunday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m., WMSE returns to the Turner Hall Ballroom to present the fifth annual Big Band Grandstand with Dewey Gill, sponsored by Bob and Jenny Hillis in honor of Bob and Genie Friedman. This gala and silent auction event is a fundraiser for Milwaukee’s favorite community-powered radio station, WMSE. Tickets to this swinging event are on sale and can be purchased here.
The Chicago Jazz Orchestra will present its Big Band Cavalcade with 18 musicians paying tribute to all the great big bands from the height of the big band era including selections from Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman and more. A definite crowd pleaser! Dancing is not required but encouraged. The Milwaukee Youth Symphony will once again open the evening and the King of Swing Dewey Gill will spin his 78s.
Although the music is the highlight, there will be auction items ranging from the always sold-out theater show, “Hamilton,” to the always loved lesson with The Milwaukee Black Smith. The evening will include light faire from Braise Restaurant and the room itself will be transformed to the days of yore. Many attendees will “dress” for the occasion.
“This year’s Big Band Grandstand will be even bigger than last year’s – and that is saying a lot! The Big Band Cavalcade song book is varied enough to please everyone and the band is BIG! With 18 members, this is the biggest big band we’ve hosted at this event ever. Thanks to this event, we are able to keep jazz alive not only in Milwaukee, but all over the world. Our 24-hour, seven days a week online stream is proof of our commitment to this important genre. We look forward to seeing everyone on the dance floor and formal dress is encouraged,” said Tom Crawford, WMSE station manager.
Tickets are on sale www.pabsttheater.org and the WMSE studios, 820 N. Milwaukee St. Buy your tickets in advance and save $10.
