FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 1, 2023 – WEST ALLIS, WIS. – The City of West Allis is excited to announce a new partnership with the Wisconsin Bike Fed. The Wisconsin Bike Fed is a local non-profit organization that advocates for a better, more bike-friendly Wisconsin. The Bike Fed aims to make bicycling convenient, safe, accessible, and fun by cultivating and uniting a community of residents, businesses, and political leaders to move bicycling forward throughout Wisconsin. Alongside Milwaukee, Shorewood, and Whitefish Bay, West Allis is the 4th Milwaukee County municipality to partner with the Bike Fed.

This new partnership coincides with a new City initiative: “Bike West Allis,” launching this summer. Bike West Allis is a public awareness and education campaign that will share information and provide residents with more resources related to bicycling in our community.

Joining As a Bike Friendly Community member, West Allis will benefit from the Bike Fed’s assistance, and support as the City looks to raise awareness about bicycling opportunities and safety. The Bike Fed will also help identify existing bike and pedestrian safety strengths and deficiencies. The partnership will include:

  • Support filing applications with the League of American Bicyclists’ “Bicycle Friendly Community” Program.
  • Ability to work with planning experts to determine best-fit pedestrian and bike-friendly enhancements
  • Access to road safety education materials for targeted campaigns
  • Networking and collaboration with other participating Bike Fed participants

“Enhancing biking opportunities in West Allis makes sense on so many levels. We are a centrally located community with great access to many amenities, including the Hank Aaron State Trail and Oak Leaf Trail. Biking also gives our residents and visitors a healthier way to move around the community, which aligns with our Community Health goals,” said Mayor Dan Devine.

This new partnership closely aligns with key elements of the City’s Strategic Plan:

1.1 Measure results and seek improvement in everything we do
1.2 Establish and enhance community partnerships
1.4 Promote healthy neighborhoods
2.2.2 Promote the City as a destination for residents and visitors
4.3.1 Identify policies, partnerships and programs for multi-modal transportation
