Water Works Urges Public to Not Open Fire Hydrants During Extreme Heat
MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Water Works is asking the public not to open fire hydrants during the expected high temperatures on Wednesday, August 23 and Thursday, August 24.
When fire hydrants are opened improperly it can cause a significant drop in water pressure, damage the hydrant or water main, and hinder the ability of the fire department to effectively extinguish fires.
“While we understand that residents are merely trying to cool off on a hot day, unauthorized opening of hydrants puts people at risk, adds stress to the system, and can make it difficult for the fire department to act quickly to put out fires,” said Water Works Superintendent Patrick Pauly.
Instead of opening hydrants, Water Works invites residents to visit one of Milwaukee County’s or Milwaukee Rec’s many local pools, wading pools, splash pads, or aquatic parks, or the Milwaukee lakefront. More information can be found at Milwaukee.gov/summer.
There are also a number of cooling centers that will be in operation on days with unusually high temperatures. Residents can learn more at Milwaukee.gov/HotWeatherSafety.
Water Works asks residents to report open hydrants to the water utility so they can be closed and ensure public safety by calling 414-286-3710.
