The shootings must come to an end
Statement from Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II April 22, 2022
Yesterday a 53-year-old woman was shot and killed on the 2600 block of N. 48 St. I send my condolences to her friends and family as they mourn the loss of a loved one. We are 112 days into the year, and so far our city has accumulated 62 homicides in addition to 197 non-fatal shootings. Every damn day there is another shooting. It is sad, disappointing, and it must end.
We all have a role to play when it comes to curbing violence. However, it must start with one basic principle – if you see something, or know that violence could occur in a given situation, you must act. There are people and resources to help. Contact your Alderperson, Crime Stoppers, the police or the Office of Violence Prevention. If you don’t feel comfortable coming forward as an individual, or reaching out to law enforcement, then talk to a local church, block club or another community group who can provide assistance.
We all have the ability to make our city a safer place, but it requires the crucial first step of coming forward to do what is right.
