Supervisors Borkowski and Taylor Seek Authority to Downsize Milwaukee County Board
Milwaukee County Board Supervisors Taylor and Borkowski have co-sponsored a resolution requesting that the State Legislature grant Milwaukee County the authority to reduce the number of County Board Supervisors at the start of the 2016 term.
Milwaukee, WI – Milwaukee County Board Supervisors Taylor and Borkowski have co-sponsored a resolution requesting that the State Legislature grant Milwaukee County the authority to reduce the number of County Board Supervisors at the start of the 2016 term. The resolution is scheduled for consideration before the Milwaukee County’s Intergovernmental Relations Committee on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 9:00AM.
In their open letter to Milwaukee County residents earlier this year, Supervisors Borkowski and Taylor vowed to work on reducing the number of members serving on the Milwaukee County Board as part of their proposal to reform county government. This resolution is a first step in doing so, since Milwaukee County doesn’t have the authority to downsize the County Board more than once in every 10 years without prior approval from State Legislature.
“I heard loud and clear from my constituents that they wish to see a reduction in the number of members serving on the Milwaukee County Board and, as their elected representative, I am taking the necessary steps to do so,” said Supervisor Taylor.
While this resolution does not specify the exact number of Supervisors the Board should consist of, Supervisors Borkowski and Taylor indicated that they would like to have no more than 13 members serve on the Board. In 2000, there were 25 Supervisors and, if allowed to downsize to 13 members, the cut would represent a nearly 50 percent reduction by 2016.
“The reform of Milwaukee County governance is certain to take place but there are many ways to go about it,” said Supervisor Borkowski. “This is just one of the tools the State should grant us in order to ensure meaningful reform that will be in the best interest of all Milwaukee County residents,” Supervisor Borkowski added.
