MILWAUKEE – On Saturday, July 16 a new 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline was activated to assist people of all ages who need help for themselves or a loved one. County Supervisor Kathleen Vincent issued the following statement in support of their efforts.

“Mental health awareness is vital to building a thriving community. I’d like to thank the dedicated staff of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for their tireless efforts in helping those who feel they have no place left to turn. This is a phenomenal resource for people in our community struggling with mental health issues. Their new launch and incredible work over the years deserves to be highlighted,” said Supervisor Vincent. “I’d also like to extend my sincerest thanks to Supervisor Peter Burgelis, who immediately offered his support in spreading awareness of the 988 Lifeline. More people knowing that help is just a phone call or text away will save lives.”

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and is now active across the United States.

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to a trained counselor at the crisis center closest to them. Veterans who dial 988 and Press 1 will be connected to the Veterans Crisis Lifeline.

The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) has remained available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.
