MILWAUKEE – At their Thursday, March 24 meeting the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors celebrated Women’s History Month by honoring Milwaukee women who embody this year’s theme of “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.”

“As we come to the end of Women History Month, I want to recognize these outstanding women who are truly the definition of community servants,” said Supervisor Priscilla E. Coggs-Jones. “We must celebrate their contributions and ongoing efforts to promote health, equity, and prosperity throughout Milwaukee County and beyond. We make women’s history 365 days a year.”

Supervisors presented Ko-Thi Dance Company Founder Ferne Caulker-Bronson, former National Council of Urban League Guilds President Michelle Crockett, Milwaukee County Corporation Counsel Margaret C. Daun, Entrepreneurs Society President Shontina Gladney, Community Activist and Milwaukee County Human Rights Commissioner Martha Love, Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin President and CEO Dr. Patricia McManus, County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson, and Project Hope Inc. Founder Dr. Shandowlyon Hendricks-Williams with official County Board citations for their many accomplishments.

Women’s History Month began as Women’s History Week in 1980 to coincide with International Women’s Day. President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation establishing the week of March 8 as Women’s History Week. In 1987, Congress officially designated March as Women’s History Month.
