Students and community members gather to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising

[Milwaukee, WI] – The Students for a Democratic Society chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), and Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee, alongside community allies, will hold a rally and march at Cathedral Square on Saturday, June 28th, commemorating the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

The protest will begin at 6:00 PM at Cathedral Square, located off of Wells and Jackson Streets in Milwaukee. Demonstrators will then continue their action by marching to 400 N. Plankinton Ave., the site of the historic Black Nite Brawl placard, and then return back to Cathedral Square.

This rally and march follows the attacks the Trump Administration has made on LGBTQIA+ rights across the country. Fifty-five years later, LGBTQIA+ rights are still under attack by those in the federal and state governments. Just like how Stonewall was a riot in response to police and political repression, our determination amidst this administration is unwavering to continue the struggle for the rights for all, no matter their background. Only 8 years before Stonewall, the Black Nite Brawl in Milwaukee saw queer Milwaukeeans fight back against homophobia and violence in their place of business and leisure. While it’s unfortunate that we still have to fight for our rights to be acknowledged and to be protected, we’ve been here the whole time and we will continue to mobilize and fight back when any of us are under attack.

Students for a Democratic Society, Reproductive Justice Action Milwaukee, and supporting groups emphasize that they will continue to resist and mobilize until the Trump Administration acknowledges the rights of all people who identify as LGBTQIA+, and protects those rights as well. We will not stay quiet because Stonewall was a riot!
