Statement Relating to ICE Detention Facility Expansion in Milwaukee
Joint statement from members of the Milwaukee Common Council: Alderman José G. Pérez, Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderman Scott Spiker, Alderman Robert J. Bauman, Alderman DiAndre Jackson, and Alderman Lamont Westmoreland
Milwaukee has long been a city built by immigrants—families who have worked hard, raised children, and contributed to the fabric of our neighborhoods. The news that the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency is possibly expanding its operations in Milwaukee is deeply concerning, especially in light of the incoming Administration’s troubling rhetoric and policies toward undocumented workers.
This city is home to thousands of hardworking individuals who are undocumented, yet play an essential role in our economy and community life. The potential targeting of these individuals with aggressive detention policies threatens not only their safety and well-being, but also the trust that we have worked hard to build between law enforcement and immigrant communities.
Milwaukee is a city that values inclusion, fairness, and opportunity for all. I will be calling on my colleagues in the City of Milwaukee, along with our partners at every level of government, to closely monitor these developments and to do everything in our power to protect Milwaukee’s immigrant families. Now is the time to stand together and ensure that Milwaukee remains a city that values the dignity of all its residents.
