Statement on the nomination of Claire Woodall-Vogg as Executive Director of the Milwaukee Election Commission
Common Council President Cavalier Johnson July 2, 2020
I am happy to support Claire Woodall-Vogg in her nomination as Executive Director of the Milwaukee Election Commission.
Claire has worked diligently to increase equitable access to voting in our city over her nearly eight year tenure with the Election Commission. Most recently, Claire spearheaded the SafeVote program introduced by Alderwoman Dimitrijevic, increasing access to absentee ballot applications for registered voters in our city during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is a dedicated public servant, who is passionate about quelling voter suppression and overcoming the barriers faced by our electorate to ensure that everyone in our city has free and fair access to electoral participation.
Today our Election Commission stands without an executive director, with primary election deadlines approaching in a matter of weeks and a spike of COVID-19 cases predicted in conjunction with a fall presidential election. Now more than ever, it is critical that we maintain consistent and experienced leadership to ensure departmental cohesion and success in navigating an unpredictable pandemic landscape.
With this in mind, I ask Council Members to support consistent, effective, efficient, and experienced leadership in the Election Commission. It is our duty as elected officials to ensure that the voices of our communities are heard through equitable voting access in our city.
